I-255 Development District (American Bottom)

The American Bottom is the name given to the flood plain of the Mississippi River in the Metro-East region of Southwestern Illinois, extending from Alton to the Kaskaskia River, mostly protected from flooding by a levee and drainage canal system.

Columbia's portion of the American Bottom includes a previously defined 2,761-acre area within the I-255 Development Corridor as defined in the City’s Master Plan. For more details, including a map and details of current market conditions and planning efforts, click here.
